About Us
The
Avery family moved into Pentewan in 1986 from the west
Midlands and have been welcoming bed ad breakfast guests
ever since. Now run by Mother and daughter team Gill
and Alison ' The Cove' is run from a building with the
unusual name of Piskey Cove. No one knows how it came
to be called this or for how long it has been known
as the Piskey (Cornish word for Pixi). What we do know
is that it is a property of two very different times.
The rear of the building was built in
the 1600's and originally stood as a row of fishermens
cottages, which occupied the banks of a small estuary.
This part of the building has walls 3 ft thick, lower
ceilings and a real sense of time gone by. Gradually
the estuary silted up leaving what is now a stream and
by 1744 a small harbour had been built. This was re
built in the early 1800's and it was then that the front
part was added onto three of the old cottages and turned
into one building. The height of the new ceilings and
tall windows bring a very different character and historical
atmosphere to that of the older part, but by no means
do you loose the sense of history from within the walls.
Our
guests are welcomed by us with an often much needed
hot drink and if your lucky you may arrive just as the
home baked scones are being taken out of the oven. What
better way could there be to start your stay in Cornwall
either as a regular visitor or a first time visitor.
At this time we will show you to your room and you will
be given two keys. One will be to your room door and
the other key will be to the main door. From this point
on you may come and go as you wish.
We believe that breakfast is a very important
meal and one, which should be as healthy or not as you
choose. The breakfast bar is laid with fresh fruit salad,
prunes, grapefruit, natural yoghurt, pro biotic yoghurt
drinks, various cereals and a choice of juice drinks
all for you to help yourself to. While you enjoy this
part of the breakfast we will cook what you have decided
to have as your main breakfast that morning. Continental
and Turkish style breakfasts are always available but
we do ask to be told if this is your preference the
day before. This will ensure that we are prepared and
therefore not disrupt the service to our other guests
or keeping you waiting and away from the rest of your
day in Cornwall.
Guests
also have the use of a comfortable lounge area with
a wood burner, two settees, coffee tables and a wonderful
armchair carved from the root of a pine tree. Games
are provided for those who wish to spend an evening
or two testing their skills, and knowledge. And there
is also an eclectic bookshelf, which should provide
reading material for most tastes along with some local
information/historical books ensuring there is something
for everyone to read should you wish.
How would we describe our bed and breakfast
?? We wouldn't, we think guests who have already stayed
with us do it better and they should know - have
a look.
